2/20/12 - Registration deadline for the ServSafe® course on March 5, 8:30 AM – 12:30 PM, and March 12, 8:30 AM – 12:30 PM with the exam starting at 12:30 PM, Penn State Extension - Monroe County, 724 Phillips Street, Suite 201, Stroudsburg, PA 18360. Cost: $175. The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture (PDA) requires the 'person in charge' in a food service operation to hold a 'nationally recognized food protection certificate' such as ServSafe®. The certified person must be accessible during the facilities hours of operation. Additionally, all individuals seeking food safety certification are required to pass a certification exam every five (5) years. The ServSafe® course, conducted by Penn State Cooperative Extension, is for individuals preparing for the exam. After attending the ServSafe® class(es) and passing the proctored, multiple-choice exam with a score of 75% or higher, participants will receive a ServSafe® certificate, which meets the PDA requirement for food safety certification. 2/14/12 - The PA Forests Web Seminar Center will be providing “live” web-based educational programs and materials for forest owners, extension educators, and natural resource professionals on forest resource related topics at 12 noon and 7 PM, lasting about an hour. Today’s topic is: Emerald Ash Borer. This webinar will provide a description of Emerald Ash Borer (EAB), problems associated with the infestation in Pennsylvania and lessons learned from researchers, scientists, forest landowners and forest resource professionals in Michigan and Ohio. The webinar will conclude by providing forest management strategies for forest landowners and managers to decrease the negative impact of Emerald Ash Borer on forest stands. This 5 session course covers topics like how to choose a business structure, goal setting, effective marketing, developing useful financial documents, and how to put it all together as a written business plan. The course is appropriate for both existing and new businesses. This class focuses on managing risks by selecting specific tools and strategies, such as liability and crop insurance products. Participants produce a draft written business plan, to be used both for daily management decision making and as a funding proposal. Today’s topic is: Small-Scale Logging. Woodlot owners often want to thin their trees, collect logs or firewood, and create desired woodland conditions. Often there are too few acres or too few trees for a commercial-scale operation, or the owner just wants more involvement in selecting, felling, and moving the wood. These tasks require special skills for safety and to achieve desired outcomes. Dr. Peter Smallidge, NYS Extension Forester at Cornell University, will cover small-scale strategies for working in your woodlot. This program is a collaborative effort between the Pike County Chamber of Commerce, Northampton Community College and Penn State Extension.

Each Leadership Pike class develops a group project to benefit the Pike County community.

The next Leadership Pike class will begin on September 9, 2011 and will meet monthly through May 11, 2012.

6/15/11 - Cornell University Cooperative Extension’s ForestConnect Webinar on “The Distribution, Ecology and Control of Hemlock Woolly Adelgid” will be offered at 12 noon and 7 PM, lasting about an hour. The hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA) is an introduced and destructive insect pest of eastern hemlocks. Hemlock woolly adelgids are a serious threat to the ecologically important Eastern hemlock forests of eastern forests and have recently spread into the Finger Lakes region of New York. HWA populations have spread rapidly and have begun killing trees. Join Mark Whitmore who has been involved with assessments of the problem and trainings to help others identify and manage this pest. Mark's webinar will cover basic HWA biology, describe the current and potential distribution in the Finger Lakes, and outline management options to preserve this valuable tree in our natural heritage. Mark will focus some attention on the recent outbreak in the Finger Lakes, but will offer guidance that has application throughout the HWA region. Mark Whitmore is a forest entomologist in the Department of Natural Resources at Cornell University.

Current social, market and ecological factors have increased the suitability for many rural landowners to adopt silvopasturing systems. Silvopasturing is relatively new in the Northeast as a legitimate and appropriate land use. Silvopasture practitioners, or “silvograziers,” may arrive from a starting point with small or large-scale traditional livestock production, woodland management, or other agricultural interests. Join Brett Chedzoy, regionally acclaimed silvopasture educator, specialist, and practitioner as he describes strategies and considerations for woodland owners and livestock producers to become active silvograziers. 4/26/11 – The first session of a Growing Stronger Exercise Program (Strong Women/Strong Men) will be held on April 26, 3:00 – 4:00 PM, at the Paupack United Methodist Church, Route 507, Paupack, PA. The cost is $45 for first-time participants, $35 for those returning to the program. The program runs for 7 weeks and meets two times a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The focus is on strength training, diet and exercise in a class setting. Individuals are educated on the effects of diet and exercise on bone health and bone mass to prevent the onset of osteoporosis. Pre-registration, including payment, is required.
